Mission of the Crash Investigation Unit
The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office established the Crash Investigation Unit to combat the increasing amount of serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents that were occurring on the county's roadways. The Prosecutor's Office will have the resources and personnel available to properly conduct an investigation of a traffic related crime. The Unit consists of an Assistant Prosecutor, Traffic Accident Reconstructionist and support staff that will handle all cases referred to the Prosecutor's Office.
While personnel from the Prosecutor's Office will often play an indispensable role in shaping the State's case, the investigation itself can only be undertaken by well trained, seasoned traffic safety professionals. A number of jurisdictions throughout Gloucester County have designated traffic safety officers. Many of these individuals have undergone advanced traffic accident investigation training and have held their positions for many years. They are familiar with roadways and traffic issues in their respective jurisdictions and can access local resources as required.
The Prosecutor's Office has recognized that without the invaluable assistance of these personnel during a vehicle homicide investigation, considerable man-hours may be wasted at the scene. The proper investigation of a motor vehicle fatality requires the use of proper investigative skills of the local investigators, combined with the talents and resources available through the Prosecutor's Office.
