The Surrogate, who is by Constitution the Judge of the Surrogate Court, is also the Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court Chancery Division Probate Part.
In keeping with the wide jurisdictional power of the Surrogate as a Constitutional Officer, the Surrogate serves not only the residents of Gloucester County, but offers services to all others from any part of the State of New Jersey, as well as non-residents wherever they may reside, with respect to matters within Gloucester County's jurisdiction.
The services rendered by the Surrogate are many, some of which are: Probating of Wills; Appointing an Administrator of an estate when someone dies without a will, Appointing a guardian of minor children due to monies being received as a result of inheritance or by award from the Court for damages received, Processing complaints to have someone declared incapacitated and scheduling the same for Court, processing adoptions and scheduling the Court date.
