(Paulsboro, NJ)—The Gloucester County Board of Commissioner is joining the Gloucester County Utilities Authorities (GCUA) to think before disposing of cleaning materials.
Flushing wipes, paper towels and similar products down toilets will impede our treatment capabilities, clog sewers and cause backups and overflows within the GCUA wastewater conveyance and treatment facility, and within the municipal sewerage systems. This practice creates an additional public health risk during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Many Gloucester County residents seem to be adhering to the recommendations of public health officials to clean and sterilize other frequently touched surfaces in their homes,” said Director Robert M. Damminger. “We’re happy to see that individuals are still adhering to these practices, but it’s good practice to be disposing of these materials in toilets.
GCUA Management and Operation staffs implore the residents connected to public sewer in Gloucester County, to properly dispose of wipes, to mitigate the strain being placed on the sewerage conveyance and treatment system by said practice.
These wipes, although they may say flushable, are truly not flushable. They do not break up like regular toilet paper.
