[ARCHIVED] Gloucester County Animal Shelter’s Barn Cat Program is in full swing

Barn Cat

(Clayton, NJ)—The Gloucester County Animal Shelter is looking for participants for its Barn Cat Program.

Barn cat programs place fully vetted cats who prefer the company of other animals into a safe, independent living setting such as a barn.

“These cats are specifically selected to be a part of our working cat program due to behaviors they are exhibiting. We do not include cats that would do well as indoor-only pets,” said Director Robert M. Damminger.

All barn cats are fully vetted, including being spayed or neutered, before they are available for the barn cat program. Individuals interested in adopting barn cats must be able to provide the cats with shelter, food, water and vet care.

"Adopting a barn cat is a winning situation for everyone. By welcoming a barn cat to your property, you are supporting the safest way to control the rodent population in your barn and around your home or business,” said Deputy Director Frank J. DiMarco.

Only individuals who meet criteria will be approved to adopt a barn cat. After adoption, the Gloucester County Animal Shelter will visit to check on the cats and how they’re acclimating to their new home.

Adopters will be required to acclimate the cats to their new home including creating a personal kennel including litter, food and water, cleaning their litter and giving fresh food and water daily. They must also take care of all veterinary needs including but not limited to regular checkups, rabies vaccinations and deworming.

If you’re interested in adopting a barn cat, please fill out the application online at www.gloucestercountynj.gov
