Department Spotlight: Fire Marshal's Office

Gloucester County is committed to serving our residents and providing them with the best services we have to offer.

As Director of the Gloucester County Board of Commissioners, I have the privilege to oversee all departments that serve the residents of Gloucester County.

In 2021, we’re continuing these services, events and more and want to educate you on how you can get the most out of living in Gloucester County.

The Gloucester County Fire Marshal's Office was created by resolution of the Board of Commissioners and is part of the Department of Emergency Response.

Some of the duties of the Gloucester County Fire Marshal's Office are as follows:

  • Assist local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies with the investigation and prevention of all suspicious or incendiary fires
  • Accept the responsibility to be the local enforcing agency for a municipality under the New Jersey Uniform Fire Act, if requested to do so by ordinance of that municipality.
  • Act as the county enforcing agency under the New Jersey Uniform Fire Act and performs fire safety inspections of all County-owned and leased buildings
  • Assist municipalities with the interpretation of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, if needed
  • Offer assistance to families, mental health agencies, units of government, including law enforcement for the intervention in juvenile fire setting incidents and administers the county juvenile fire-setter program
    • The Gloucester County Fire Marshal provides literature on fire safety tips, fire prevention and more on their webpage.
  • Provides for the public awareness for the prevention and elimination of all fire hazards

The Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office is also home to Gloucester County’s Fire K9, Ember. Ember is a one-year-old Red Fox Lab who assists the Gloucester County Fire Marshal in arson investigations.

After 16 weeks of training, Ember is ready to find evidence of suspected arson crime.  She is trained on accelerants including gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, turpentine, butane and various other flammable solvents including household things like lighter fluid and nail polish remover.

When Ember enters the fire scene, she'll sniff out the whole area and then she'll sit at the exact spot an accelerant was poured.

Myself and the entire Board of County Commissioners is committed to providing outstanding services to its residents. Our departments will always provide individuals with the best service for them and their families. We hope if you are in need, you will not hesitate to reach out to our departments and offices.

The Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office can be contacted at (856) 307-7913 or by visiting here:

We are always here to answer questions and listen to suggestions from our residents. It’s with your help that we can continue to make Gloucester County the best place for you, your family and your friends to live, work and grow.

Thank you,

Robert M. Damminger
