(National Park, NJ)—On Sunday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Gloucester County Board of Commissioners will celebrate the 244th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Mercer at Red Bank Battlefield.

“Many of our residents are unaware of the history that Gloucester County has and our part in the American Revolution,” said Commissioner Director Robert M. Damminger. “Gloucester County continues to grow and expand, but we still celebrate the history of how we came to be the County of Gloucester.”

The Battle of Red Bank was a battle fought during the American Revolutionary War in which a British and Hessian force was sent to take Fort Mercer on the left bank of the Delaware River just south of Philadelphia, but was decisively defeated by a far inferior force of colonial defenders. This was a huge victory for the Americans in the American Revolutionary War.

“During the 18th Century Field Day, we take you back in time to what it was like to live during the 18th century. From the food, to the clothing and even a battle reenactment, we share the history with all our residents,” said Commissioner Jim Lavender, Liaison to the Department of Parks and Recreation.
