Gloucester County Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Director Frank J. DiMarco, Deputy Director Heather Simmons, Commissioner Denice DiCarlo, and County Clerk James N. Hogan are eager to share an update on the Gloucester County Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
“This project will repair a total of 8 bridges across the County,” said Director Frank J. DiMarco. “All work being completed on this project is State Aid funded and is part of our County Engineering Project #21-01.”
The following includes a brief description of the work completed for each bridge:
- Bridge 4-J-6 on Salina Road over Bees Branch in Deptford and Washington Townships
- Installation of a 10” thick concrete surface course as decking, along with new parapet walls, new guiderail approaches, and asphalt paving transitions to the new deck.
- The parapet walls were painted, the existing concrete structures were also cleaned and waterproofed, and all existing concrete needing repairs such as spall repairs and crack repairs were completed.
- Rip rap was installed in the channel and on the slopes as needed. The existing concrete storm pipe was clean. Inlets reconstructed and outfall pipes were replaced.
- Bridge 6-H-5 on C.R. 623 Clems Run over Clems Run and Kincaid Lake in Harrison Township
- The repairs include the installation of a 10” thick concrete surface course as decking, along with new parapet walls, new guiderail approaches, and asphalt paving transitions to the new deck.
- The parapet walls were painted, the existing concrete structures were also cleaned and waterproofed, and all existing concrete needing repairs such as spall repairs and crack repairs were completed.
- Rip rap was installed in the channel and on the slopes as needed.
- Bridge 6-H-8 on C.R. 623 Clems Run over Miery Run in Harrison Township
- The repairs include the installation of a 10” thick concrete surface course as decking, along with new parapet walls, new guiderail approaches, and asphalt paving transitions to the new deck.
- The parapet walls were painted, the existing concrete structures were also cleaned and waterproofed, and all existing concrete needing repairs such as spall repairs and crack repairs were completed.
- Rip rap was installed in the channel and on all of the slopes.
This project was created to make priority and recommended repairs to 8 bridges throughout the County. The list of repairs to be performed at the remaining 5 bridge location is based on a bridge inspection performed by a consultant for the NJDOT. The remaining locations and the work to be performed at each location are described below.
Bridge 3-D-1 Floodgate Road over Repaupo Creek in Logan and Greenwich Townships. Based on priority repairs in the bridge inspection for this wooden bridge structure, the railings and pedestrian walkways require replacement. Some of the timber wales and cross bracing needs to be replaced. Two (2) 14’6” long timber girders were cracked and it was suggested that additional beams be ‘sistered’ to the original beams. Some of the timber wing walls needed patching to cover gaps between the old timbers after filling the voids. Finally, the hydrant pipe into the creek needed to be reattached to the bridge railing.
Bridge 4-L-5 on C.R. 705 Woodbury Turnersville Road over Bells Lake Creek in Washington Township.
Based on the priority repairs in the bridge inspection report, and the recommendations in the report, the following repairs will be made:
To repair the 242”x148” elliptical corrugated metal pipe, the existing gabion baskets and fill material inside the deteriorated pipe must be removed first. d. A new 242”x148” diameter half pipe will be installed inside the existing pipe by bolting the new half pipe in place. The void between the new pipe and the old pipe will be grouted in to fill the voids. New fill material and gabion baskets will then be installed inside the pipe to match the old elevations. Repairs of the cracked and spalled concrete on the abutment and wing walls will be performed. Roughly 130 SY of cracked sidewalk will be replaced. A 30” diameter corrugated metal pipe crossing the road will be lined rather than excavated and replaced. 87.5 LF of guiderail with new Tangent Guide Rail Terminals will be replaced to bring the bridge up to current safety standards. Finally, the parapet walls will be parged and painted, along with the waterproofing of the entire concrete structure.
Bridge 5-J-10 on East Holly Avenue over Porch Branch in Washington Township.
Based on the priority repairs in the bridge inspection report, and following the recommendations in the report, it was decided to install a new 105” diameter half pipes inside each of the two existing corrugated metal pipes by bolting the new half pipe in place and then grouting between the pipes to fill the voids. Repairs of the cracked and spalled concrete on the abutment and wing walls will be performed. The wing walls that have severe delamination will be coated with pneumatically applied mortar. New caps to the abutment walls will be installed. The storm system associated with the bridge structure will be cleaned and repaired. Roughly 12 SY of riprap slope protection will be installed to eliminate erosion issues.
Bridge 3-F-18 on C.R. 653 Billingsport Road over Conrail in Greenwich Township.
Based on the priority repairs in the bridge inspection report, and following the recommendations in the report, the priority repairs listed below will be performed:
Concrete expansion joints in the road will be repaired. Roughly 28 SY of sidewalk and 40 LF of curb will be removed and replaced as needed. All cracks in the concrete structure will be repaired. Any spalling or larger repairs will have the concrete removed and replaced. Temporary shielding is required over the Conrail tracks passing under the bridge. All work will be coordinated with Conrail.
Bridge 10-L-3 on C.R. 615 Malaga Park Drive over Malaga Branch in Franklin Township.
Based on the priority repairs in the bridge inspection report, and following the recommendations in the report, it was decided to replace the parapets due to severe deterioration. The parapets will be replaced with new parapets meeting current standards. A 60’x30’ wide concrete roadway will be installed to help tie in the new parapets with the old abutment walls. 162.5 LF of guiderail will be installed in accordance with current standards. Approximately 660 LF of 28”x20” diameter storm pipe will be lined since the road was paved in 2020. The abutment walls will have the cracks and spalls repaired. Roughly 60 SY of riprap will be installed on the slopes and 75 SY of riprap will be installed in the channel to eliminate erosion and scour.
