August E. "Gus" Knestaut has served as administrative/first undersheriff for the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office since 2013. He is responsible for administrative operations and assignments within the Sheriff's Office, and oversees all court security operations. He liaisons for the Sheriff's Office with:

- Local and county government agencies and police
- New Jersey Sheriff's Association
- New Jersey State Police
- U.S. Marshall's Service
Undersheriff Knestaut has a law degree, receiving his Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law in 1991. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics from St. Joseph's University in 1988. He successfully completed the PTC Basic Firearms Course at the Camden County College Police Academy in 2015. He obtained his Certificate in Public Sector Labor Relations from Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations in 2014. He is a 1984 graduate of Paulsboro High School.
Undersheriff Knestaut is an attorney. He has been admitted to practice law before the State Courts of New Jersey by the New Jersey Supreme Court; and admitted to practice law before the State Courts of Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He was also admitted to practice before the Federal Courts in the District of New Jersey, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
Undersheriff Knestaut worked in private practice for 17 years as a litigation and transactional attorney with an emphasis on municipal, government, criminal and zoning and planning law. In 2009, he became an Assistant County Counsel for the County of Gloucester, and served as such in the County Counsel's office until December, 2012. While in the County Counsel's office, a part of his duties included representing the Sheriff's Office, including advising on office policies, procedures, disciplinary matters and litigation.
Undersheriff Knestaut has served as Municipal Prosecutor to and for the Borough of Paulsboro, Township of West Deptford, Township of Greenwich, Township of East Greenwich, and the Borough of Maple Shade. He has also served as Special Prosecutor in the Township of Franklin; and as conflicts Municipal Prosecutor in various Gloucester County municipalities, including the Borough of Glassboro.
Undersheriff Knestaut has served as Solicitor to and for the Gloucester County Planning Board, the West Deptford Township Planning Board, and the Washington Township Planning Board. He has also served as Solicitor to and for the Gloucester County Construction Board of Appeals, and the Gloucester Country Agriculture Development Board. He also previously served as Special Counsel to the Builders League of South Jersey.
