CSO Steve Brown

Having over 28 years of experience in law enforcement, Chief Sheriff’s Officer Steven R. Brown began his career with the Vineland Police Department in 1993 and was assigned to the patrol division, Street Crimes Unit, and instructed in the police academy.

In 1998 Chief Brown began his career with the New Jersey State Police.  Chief Brown was assigned to several road stations as a general road duty Trooper where he also was a Trooper Coach, before being assigned to the Camden Anti-Crime Partnership in 2001.  Following this assignment, Chief Brown was assigned to the Tactical Patrol Unit, and eventually became a detective in the Criminal Investigation Office.

In 2006, Chief Brown was transferred to the Fugitive Unit where he was also assigned to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force.  Chief Brown spent over 12 years in the Fugitive Unit rising to the rank of Lieutenant and Unit Head.  During this time, Chief Brown was a member of the New Jersey State Police Crisis Negotiation Team where he eventually took over as coordinator in 2015.

In 2018, Chief Brown became the Assistant Bureau Chief of the Major Crime Bureau, leading the Major Crime Unit, Fugitive Unit, Missing Persons Unit, Cold Case Homicide Unit, and assisted with supervising the Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team (SRT).  Chief Brown was later promoted to Captain and became the Bureau Chief of the Regulatory & Investigative Services Bureau supervising the Firearms Unit, Evidence Management Unit, Governmental Integrity Unit, Business Integrity Unit, and Private Detective Unit.  Chief Brown was also assigned as a Regional Peer Mentor and Investigations Branch Training Coordinator.  Chief Brown holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. 

Chief Brown is married with one daughter, and one son.
