Septic system plan review and installation approval assure the proper disposal of sewage, protection of groundwater, and avoidance of nuisance conditions. Additionally, investigations of malfunctioning systems and alterations and repairs to existing systems are enforced by this division.
Applications
Sewage disposal systems applications that serve individual homes and facilities and generate less than 2,000 gallons of sewage per day are processed in compliance with the applicable regulatory standards. Systems that exceed 2,000 gallons per day are referred to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
Newly Constructed Septic Systems
Prior to use, newly constructed septic systems must be certified as being in compliance with state regulations. The certification is issued through a License to Operate. All sewage disposal system repairs or alterations must be approved.
Proposed Additions
Proposed additions to any septic system or changes to the volume or quality of the sewage effluent must be evaluated prior to the issuance of a construction permit for the addition or change of use.
Commercial Facilities
Commercial facilities must have an engineer evaluate the septic system for a change of use.
Properly Abandonment
Septic systems must be properly abandoned upon the replacement of the system, demolishing of the dwelling, or connection to municipal sewerage.
